Alpine SPR-60C Customer reviews

Alpine SPR-60C Review by Art of NY

We installed them into my brothers 2007 Infiniti G35, two in front and two in the rear window panel. Connected to a Pioneer video deck with 50x4 watt output. The speakers sound really good and crisp, but lack bass (maybe if connected through an amp it would add more bass as they can handle about 110watt). But we didn't worry about it too much as we were planning to lower the bass on them anyway. As we were also installing Alpine 10" subs for that extra bass. Together with the subs these speakers sound better and clearer than anything I have installed previously (about 7 installations over the years). If my Cadillac didn't come with a complicated system already installed, I would have definitely installed this setup into it.

Alpine SPR-60C Review by alexanderaku

Forty-two years ago I purchased a somewhat sporty compact car no one would have ever thought I would have kept so long or up so well. The car still looks new - and smells new. Even so after it having seen many changes through the years. The first change was a new drivetrain in the early 70's capable of supporting over 500 horsepower. I retired it from drag racing some 35 years ago (wouldn't install the required roll bars), and it has now been a very long time since it was a trophy winning car, but it's still an eye catching conversation piece that still runs as great as it looks.

I still enjoy firing up its engine and shifting through the gears of the Nascar 4-speed, but something was missing. It had been almost forty years since it had a really nice sounding radio - like what I had in the car when I was a teenager dating pretty girls that always took a liking to me and this car.

As you can imagine, this car had little to no insulation for sound isolation - purposely kept light for racing (even acid-dipped to shave weight). Dynamat took care of most of that. It also needed a good headunit - a Kenwood eXcelon had taken care of that. But, the eXcelon speakers I installed with the headunit in 2006 were rated too low for what was still needed. After installing a new Kenwood HR300 HD unit, I became painfully aware I couldn't hear the HD radio improvement very well with the engine even just at idle. Over 500 horsepower has a very healthy exhaust note - and my eXcelon system needed an amplifier.

A few weeks back, I added the eXcelon X600F with its 100 watts of rated RMS power X4. Yep, it did the trick - but my speakers were about to take a hike when I turned up the volume on the highway to drown the engine roar for a clearer listen of the radio - and who just wants to sit around with the engine off to hear their tunes? I wasn't about to, and I didn't want to burn up or blow my still good eXcelon speakers (they will make a large improvement in a quieter vehicle).

I had no problem finding Infinity Kappa 6x9's, to fit the factory rear shelf, with a 110 watt RMS rating and a 330 watt peak rating to match the new eXcelon X600F amplifier. But, Infinity had nothing to match that would fit anywhere in front without butchering my old classic. Alpine saved the day with these SPR-60C's.

The SPR-60C's carry almost the same ratings as my 6x9 Infinity Kappa 693.9i speakers with a few exceptions. The SPR-60C's have less bass capability due to their size and construction, but they have a softer mid range due to their construction and also have a resulting 88dB rating. At a rated impedance of 3.3 Ohms, the SPR-60C's also won't give a larger boost to the front "A" channel section above the Kenwood eXcelon X600F amplifier's 100 watt standard RMS rating. The actual digitally measured Ohms of each speaker is just over 4 Ohms. At any rate, the amplifier's added boost capability for 2 Ohm impedance speakers is really not needed in front. The Infinity Kappa 693.9i's with their 2.2 Ohm impedance coils do give the amplifier's "B" section a boost up to 130 watts RMS. The Kappas also have a 96dB rating. This delivers plenty of bass from the rear, while the Alpine SPR-60C's in front deliver everything else needed there for good balance.

I especially like the short mounting depth (2 5/16") of the SPR-60C's as it meant I had little trouble mounting them in kick panels (actually, I mounted mine in the center console kick panels I had built some years back) - no butchering of my sheet metal, and only minor changes to the kick panels for a well protected and nice look. Even the 1" silk tweeters included with the SPR-60C's were a treat - small enough and designed so I had no problem incorporating them to the lower dash with a factory look - again without butchering anything. Not butchering anything was a key factor I had to address. I couldn't bear to cut up anything on this car after so many years of owning it.

I also liked the noticeable light weight that sacrifices nothing in quality due, in part, to the sturdy, more vibration resistant, polymer cage. Also contributing to the light weight is the Neodymium magnet - which is lighter while being stronger than Samarium Cobalt and others. Neodymium can be up to 1300 times stronger than it's weight - much stronger than other currently used ceramic magnet materials.

In the end, I was rewarded with powerful and sweet tunes just like I wanted and needed in the front section of the car. I also received a reasonable deal on the front speakers here at Amazon - considering others wanted twice as much for them. If it hadn't been for these Alpines, I would still be looking. Alpine has always had a good product - I have used various Alpine headunits and speakers in other cars since the 1970's and all of them were good. More recently, I used a set of Alpine SPS-410's in the dash of a 1985 Trans Am I own. They fit the bill there perfectly also, and rewarded me with excellent tones from the dash of that car - tones that were much improved over anything else that would fit that OEM dash. I just wish Alpine would have had 6x9's with the specs I needed, that the Infinity Kappa 693.9i's have - I could have used all Alpine speakers then. At least the Alpine SPR-60C's are a very good match for my Kappa's and my powerful X600F 4-channel class AB amplifier. These are great speakers for their smaller form factor.

Don't believe it? Check out the prices and specs for the comparable Boston Acoustics Pro60SE. The Alpine SPR-60C's win in my book, and they fit the bill perfectly for most 4-channel amplifiers in applications delivering 100 watts RMS x4.

***Note***

While much stronger and lighter than other magnet types, the Neodymium magnet is less resistant to humidity and corrosion than others. This is why it is coated (chromed with this speaker set). Should it get scratched during installation, use epoxy paint to reseal the coating. You'll also want to be more careful about having magnetic field sensitive items near these speakers - the polymer frame shields the magnetic field less than metal.

Additional speaker information -

If you want added base and improved (slightly higher) real time RMS and peak power levels, above a speakers factory rated specifications, seal the rear of each speaker into an air tight enclosure of a sufficient air volume for its size - using the same type of materials that are commonly used for subwoofer boxes. The volumes you will need to use are the same as published recommended volumes for similarly sized subwoofers in sealed boxes. You'll get cleaner lows and mid bass with tighter control over your speakers - with lows more similar to sealed subs. This also gives extended speaker life. It's not just the speaker, but placement and proper use that makes a great sounding system. Properly sealed and ported designs are the secrets behind BOSE and other high-end systems that sound so great. With better built speakers like these, even those systems can be made to sound better. Remember, also, to always pay attention to amplifier impedance and power levels when changing or building your system. It's mistakes that cause most problems. Even "Pro's" can, and do, make mistakes.

Alpine SPR-60C Review by James

I bought the last model of these speakers for my front doors in a ford ranger a year ago and now ive finally bought this set for my rear. I mounted the tweaters at ear level in the upper corners of the back sear so the truck is full of sound. These speakers really crank with no distortion. Every note is crisp and clean. They are connected to a 4 channel alpine 50watt per channel amp. I have a sub for the bass and highly recommend having a sub if you want full sound. With the right tools they can be installed in 1-4 hours depending on your installation. Save money and do it yourself! plus you'll know it's installed correctly. I had besy buy install an amp to power my speakers and they reversed the left and right channel on the rear speakers! always verify that work you have done is proper!
